Go to jail for not being nice
SB 44 would make a person guilty of a crime if they "accosts, insults, taunts, or challenges a law enforcement officer with offensive or derisive words, or by gestures or other physical contact, that would have a direct tendency to provoke a violent response from the perspective of a reasonable and prudent person."
Importantly, SB 44 makes it a crime (a Class B misdemeanor with a penalty of up to 90 days' imprisonment) to insult a police officer at a protest, giving excessive discretion to the officer and the judicial system to decide what is an insult, what is a protest, and who is "a reasonable and prudent person."
Anti-camping sections in the original bill could be used to target homeless communities.
SB 44 is in the Senate Judiciary committee.
