Groups Plan to Celebrate Democracy, Work to Make It Stronger

Public Celebration to Feature Music and Speakers

Members of the Perry County chapter of Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, the Hazard Perry County Branch of the NAACP, and the Democratic Women’s Club of Perry County are pleased to announce Celebrating Democracy, an event to be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5 at City Hall in downtown Hazard.

The summit was announced today by Gov. Steve Beshear, U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers and other elected officials.

Just before leaving office, former President George Bush eliminated a key protection for Appalachian waterways known as the Stream Buffer Zone. The Obama administration pledged to reverse this action but thus far has failed to do so. Today a broad coalition of citizen and environmental groups asked the U.S. District Court to restore that protection.

Carmichael's Bookstore and KFTC will host a discussion and book signing with West Virginia attorney Bruce Stanley on Wednesday, August 21 at 7 PM at Carmichael's Bookstore, 2720 Frankfort Avenue. Mr. Stanley is one of the lawyers who led the battle to bring Massey Energy coal baron Don Blankenship to justice. This event is free and open to all.

KFTC member Ethan Hamblin receives 2013 Sargent Shriver Youth Warriors Against Poverty Award

The Marguerite Casey Foundation has awarded 22-year-old Ethan Hamblin, a Berea College senior and KFTC member, of Gays Creek (Perry County) the Sargent Shriver Youth Warriors Against Poverty Leadership Award.

April conference to focus creating economic opportunities

Eastern Kentucky’s economy is changing fast, and a group of folks in the region believe they can help move it in a positive direction. They’ll come together for three days to focus on the challenges and opportunities facing eastern Kentucky, and ways to shape a just transition for the region, at the Appalachia’s Bright Future: A Conversation on Shaping a Just Transition conference taking place April 19-21 in Harlan.
