Last week, members of KFTC and our allies told the Kentucky Division of Water at a public hearing that a new General Permit for Coal that allows the quality of our streams to get worse is simply unacceptable.
Please join us in adding your name to a letter to state officials that says our water below coal mining operations must be protected.
Most coal mining operations in Kentucky are allowed to pollute using this General Permit, which is designed to set limits on the amount of pollutants that can be discharged into streams. The work of KFTC members over the years has forced state officials to strengthen some provisions in the new General Permit (it must be renewed every five years, and the current one expires July 31).
We’ve helped point out that there must be limits on conductivity and selenium, and these have been included in the new permit, though in ways that fail to adequately protect our waters. The bottom line is that even with a stronger General Permit for Coal, the quality of our waterways will not improve and already degraded streams can get worse, and good quality streams can become polluted.
That’s why we’ve created this sign-on letter, so that more of us can let state officials know we want our water protected, and the General Permit must be strengthened.
Please add your name before noon on Tuesday, July 1
