League of Women Voters of Kentucky Seeks Citizen Input on Redistricting

LOUISVILLE, KY-Every ten years all state legislators across the US redraw their districts based on the 10-year census data. The US Census Bureau released the 2020 census numbers today.  Now it is time for our Kentucky legislators to draw fair maps using that new data.

Building the Democracy Kentucky needs is a key step to winning our vision for Kentucky’s future.  We need to make sure all Kentucky voices have a chance to be heard

The campaign to restore voting rights of Kentuckians with felonies in their past is continuing, with increasing field work to find the 170,000 people who recently got their right to vote back and to help them register to vote!  That’s happening alongside our online efforts to train people, reach people through texting, lobby legislators, and more.

Voter Registration for Kentuckians with felonies in their past (and others)

Lexington Voter Registration June 2021KFTC members and allies are hard at work in the field - community tabling and door-to-door to find Kentuckians with felonies in their past and helping them to register to vote if they got their rights back through Beshear’s executive order.  This work is being integrated into existing canvassing efforts and some stand-alone events, particularly in Lexington where Tayna Fogle is leading weekly talking events.  These events are also key places to circulate our Voting Rights petition to identify supporters and get them involved.

Your 2019 executive order attempted to help reduce disenfranchisement of Kentuckians with felony records in their past, and was a huge step toward a healthy democracy. Redistricting on the Horizon

Every 10 years after completion of the US Census, it falls to the Kentucky Legislature to conduct a redistricting process to redraw political boundaries for US Congress, KY House, and KY Senate to rebalance districts based on new population numbers.  These new districts will last 10 years until the next redistricting.

Voting Rights work moves beyond legislature to field work

VotingRightsCoalition5-11-21The Kentucky Voting Rights Coalition together has accomplished a lot in these last few months:

Virtual Lobby Day for a Healthy Democracy with over 70 participants (legislative meetings, a lobby training, social media training, letter to the editor training, spokesperson training, generated tons of calls to the legislative message line and good outreach through social media, and had a fantastic virtual rally with powerful stories in the afternoon).  Thanks especially to Pastor E, Shelton McElroy, Bonifacio Aleman, Savvy Shabazz, Dee Pregilsco, and Debbie Graner for leading the virtual rally. The Kentucky Council of Churches led a strong Virtual Prayer and Action Day about Voting Rights Multiple phone banks and text banks to reach people on this issue and connect them with the legislative message line Strong virtual lobby trainings and issue trainings

You’ve made an impact during the 2021 General Assembly. Some of these impacts have been on legislation – a key meeting with a legislator that changes the course of a bill, or a push of calls and tweets that makes the will of the people more visible and harder to ignore. We also set a goal this session to continue to build the power we need. So many impacts have been in our own communities, talking with neighbors and networks about the bills that impact us, and the work of our legislators.

Healthy Democracy Update - Phone and Text

KUUJAN and KFTC Phone Bank 3-2-21In terms of legislative outcomes in this moment, our Healthy Democracy work is really struggling right now.  Our bill to restore voting rights for people with felonies in their past (HB 232) has broad bipartisan support and we’ve helped recruit 16 co-sponsors to the bill, but it’s not even been assigned to committee.  

Likewise, our endorsed bills around redistricting process, same-day voter registration, early voting, voting by mail, keeping polls open until 7pm, etc. have not gotten far.

In terms of our work, though, we’ve managed to build and use a lot of power by reaching out to constituentsdirectly through phone and text.
