Groups Plan to Celebrate Democracy, Work to Make It StrongerPublic Celebration to Feature Music and Speakers
Members of the Perry County chapter of Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, the Hazard Perry County Branch of the NAACP, and the Democratic Women’s Club of Perry County are pleased to announce Celebrating Democracy, an event to be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5 at City Hall in downtown Hazard.
Scheduled on the second Tuesday in November – what is Election Day in other years – Celebrating Democracy will highlight the importance of voting and what makes a healthy democracy, and will feature speakers and singers from around Perry County, including the Consolidated Baptist Church Choir. This celebratory event will be lead by Reverend Lowell Parker of Consolidated Baptist Church.
With low voter turnout across Kentucky and Perry County, and almost a quarter of a million Kentuckians unable to vote because of the state’s felony disenfranchisement laws, event organizers hope to inspire changes that will improve participation in elections and other democratic institutions.
“Democracy is how you keep a healthy community. It’s how we can all speak up and make sure that our community has the resources, attention, and opportunities to thrive. We all need to participate and be actively involved in our community’s future by not only voting, but also making it easier and able for others to participate and have the confidence to actively vote and make their voices heard,” said Katie Pirotina, a Perry County chapter member and student from Hazard. “Celebrating Democracy is an opportunity for us to come together as a community and to talk about voting, why it’s important, and how we can make it easier for everyone to be involved.”
This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information about Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, please visit www.kftc.org.
