Candidate Filing Deadline and Election Preview

HPIM1494

Kentucky's 2011 Election will elect people to our six statewide, constitutional offices - Governor (and Lt. Governor), Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, Auditor, and Secretary of Agriculture.

Key 2011 Election Dates

- April 18th – Voter Reg Deadline

- May 17th – Primary Election

- October 11th – Voter Reg Deadline

- November 8th – General Election Day

We're still in the early stages of formulating KFTC's election-related plans for the year, but they will certainly include large scale non-partisan voter registration, education, and mobilization work, as we've done since the 2004 Election.

More immediately, though, we want to spread the word that Tuesday, January 25th is the candidate filing deadline: the last day to file nomination papers for candidates who must run in a primary election (generally, people who will be running at a Republican or a Democrat).

KFTC broadly encourages our members to seriously consider running for public office, because robust elections with a variety of candidates and ideas is crucial to a functioning democracy.

Check out the Secretary of State's website for more information on how to file, and to see a list of candidates who have already filed to run.

Note that many people have also declared their candidacy and are actively running, but who have not officially filed to run yet and therefore don't yet appear on the Secretary of State's roster.  For example, Senate President David Williams, Phil Moffett, and Gatewood Galbraith are all actively campaigning for Governor, but aren't yet listed as having filed.
