Deep Down to tour internationally

The documentary film Deep Down: A story from the heart of coal country ,which premiered on the Emmy-award-winning PBS series Independent Lens in November, has been selected for the American Documentary Showcase. The film's participation in this prestigious cultural diplomacy program will draw international attention to the issue of mountaintop removal coal mining and community organizing in Eastern Kentucky.


Deep Down and the story of a community in Floyd County, Kentucky that successfully organized, with KFTC 's help, to stop a mountaintop removal permit will travel the globe with the American Documentary Showcase, a cultural program of the U.S. Department of State.


Deep Down imageThe American Documentary Showcase brings award-winning U.S. documentaries to audiences around the world to offer a view of U.S. society and culture as seen by independent documentary filmmakers. Deep Down is one of 19 films chosen to represent independent documentaries and contemporary issues this year.


The directors of Deep Down , Jen Gilomen and Sally Rubin, will travelinternationally with experts and embassy representatives, speak to audiences, and share their work to provoke discussion and cultural exchange.


The Showcase highlights the value of documentaries in fostering understanding and cooperation,
dialogue and debate.They explore diverse topics including civil rights, the treatment of military veterans, environmentalism and freedom of the press.
