Democracy Restoration Act of 2009

DSCN0419

You may be familiar with our campaign in Kentucky to restore voting rights to former felons who have served their debt to society.  Kentucky is one of only two states do not restore voting rights to any former felons unless they get a pardon from the Governor.

Forty eight states, however, take voting rights away from at least some former felons.  The laws are radically different from state to state and the total impact is that an estimated 5.3 million Americans  are disenfranchised.

The recently introduced Democracy Restoration Act,
sponsored by Rep John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), would restore voting rights to all former felons for purposes of voting in Federal Elections - so that an individual’s voting rights are not dependent on his or her geographic location for national elections.

Please call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or email your Representative and Senators to support and co-sponsor the Democracy Restoration Act today.

You can also contact both of your Senators and your local Representative separately by email form and by phone.
