Growing Appalachia preparations

Growing Appalachia is a day-long conference hosted by the Floyd County chapter with workshops from beginning organic gardening to do-it-yourself energy efficiency. This year's conference will be our 4th and is sure to be the best yet. Last year, attendees asked for food preservation workshops, so this year, our very own Beverly May is rolling up her sleeves and dragging out her canning jars.

DSCN1329Beverly's workshop will be primarily focusing on canning items commonly grown by small-scale gardeners and farmers in Appalachia, although she is quite the canning gourmet as evidenced by her green tomato and pear chutney. She wants the workshop to be approachable, so attendees feel as if they can run right home and start canning their own food. The workshops will have three tracks: Beginning, Advanced and a Efficiency/Renewable Energy track so anyone can come and find a place to fit their interest and skill level.

Growing Appalachia will be on March 9th, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Jenny Wiley Convention Center in Prestonsburg. The day is open and free to the public, however, there is a suggested $10 donation per adult to help with the cost of the locally grown lunch we will serve. Online registration for the event is coming soon, so keep checking back. Hope to see you there!
