Harvest moon alleycat was a big success! | Kentuckians For The Commonwealth

Harvest moon alleycat was a big success!

The race kicked off at the London Ferrell community garden in Lexington at the corner of 3rd St. and Elm Tree. Folks dressed in their best square dance attire with a chance to win some really neat prizes including brunch at Al's bar, fresh organic greens from Seedleaf, a copy of Saturday Night Fever on vinyl and a ceramic chicken. Last place winner took home a thigh master to get in shape for next year!

After registration the cyclists had to race to various social justice checkpoints around town. At each checkpoint was a different community organization with information about their work and how to get involved.

After the race folks returned to the garden for a good old fashioned square dance called by Julie Shepherd-Powell. KFTC member Beverly May came all the way from Langley KY to play fiddle for us and a group of folks from Berea joined her to form an old-time band.

Every one had a great time and we raised over $250 from the event, not to mention 10 new folks joined Kentuckians For The Commonwealth. It was also really exciting to partner with several amazing community organizations on the bike race. Participating groups included Lexington Fairness The Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center, Moveable Feast. Kentucky Mountain Justice, AIDS Volunteers of Lexington (AVOL), the Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice, The broke spoke - Lexington's soon to be open community bike shop, The Imperial Court of Kentucky, and of course Seedleaf and KFTC.
