Kentuckians pulling together for mutual aid after disasters

Kentuckians are pulling together to help our neighbors hard hit by the flooding that struck many areas in Kentucky in early March, including some individuals and communities still recovering from ice storms and severe winter weather a week or two before.

The links below are good ways to make monetary contributions that will be distributed flood victims in eastern Kentucky.

The Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund founded by Estill County natives Tyler Childers and Senora May.

There also are many activities and joint efforts to raise funds:

• nine groups under the banner of Appalachia Rises held a successful telethon Monday night and continue to accept contributions, which will be distributed by the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky and the Blue Grass Community Foundation.
• the old-time duo The Local Honeys are partnering with Appalachians for Appalachia and the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky to gather donations and supplies to distribute to flood victims at music club The Burl, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. "Cleaning supplies in urgent need include sponges, bleach and five-gallon buckets. Pillows, blankets, adult and toddler diapers, toilet paper, paper towels, single pack toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products and pet food are also in demand."

Many Appalachian musicians are coordinating and donating their talents for virtual concerts over the next few days and week. See more here.

The Christian Appalachian Project is available to help homeowners assess flood damage and make repairs. The organization said it has centers in Paintsville and in Mt. Vernon where people can go to request flood assistance between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. For more information or to help the Christian Appalachian Project, visit ChristianApp.org.
