Kentucky has plenty of coal ash
The Associated Press has developed an interactive map showing the generation and disposal of toxic coal ash around the country. Kentucky has the third highest (after Ohio and Indiana) amount of coal waste, generating more than 4 million tons of ash per year, with 45 percent of this going into ponds (2005 data).
Below is the amounts of toxic coal ash that went into ponds in Kentucky in 2005, compiled by James Bruggers, the environmental writer with The Courier-Journal. See Jim's blog post here, and the AP interactive map here.
