MLK Events Throughout The State Tomorrow

There will be marches and other events throughout the state celebrating the life and ideals of Martin Luther King Jr. and we encourage members to take this day to come out in solidarity with our allies and to participate in those events. 

Georgetown

The Georgetown Martin Luther King Jr. March will start at 4pm, leaving from Giddings Circle of Georgetown College.  After the march there will be a Martin Luther King Jr. Ceremony the college’s John Hill Chapel (also on Giddings Circle) at 5pm.  Local KFTC members will be marching with our banner and also passing out a half-sheet on Martin Luther King Jr. and the struggle for voting rights in Kentucky. 

Hazard

The Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast is at 9am in HCTC’s First Federal Center. The theme "Moving the Dream Forwardâ€ is part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the Martin Luther King holiday.  Perry County KFTC members will be attending.

Lexington

Lexington KFTC members and over a thousand other will gather for their big MLK Freedom March, starting at about 9030am at the downtown Lexington Center Heritage Hall on West Main Street.  That march will get underway at 10am, but it's best to get there early.  You can learn about other Lexington MLK Day events here. 

Other Communities

There will be events  across the state too numerous to list here.  Please check your local paper to find what events will be held in your community.  Here is a list of some events across the state publicized by the Office of Minority Empowerment.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is also a good opportunity to talk to people about our campaign to restore voting rights to former felons who have served their debt to society.  Amongst other things, this disenfranchisement is an extension of Jim Crow laws that disproportionally take the right to vote away from low-income Kentuckians and African Americans.  Here is a version of the factsheet we'll be passing out at events across the state tomorrow to shed light on this.  This particular one will be used in Lexington.
