New Power Pledgers Rising Up!
This week has really boosted the buzz about the New Power Pledge! New Power ads have hit campus papers, local papers, and over the radio, and students are throwing it down with the New Power Campus Challenge! The University of Kentucky is in the lead. Here's the report from Jared Flanery, a UK KFTC member:
Last night we had a New Power Party replete with pizza, politics, and a strobe light. Other than that we've just been talking to people about New Power and the response has been really positive. I don't have a definite count on our signatures as of now but I can tell you that the number is growing by leaps each day.
Other campuses are pulling together great events, too. NKU is right behind UK in New Power Pledgers. Clair White reported,
I had about twenty pledge forms, and I didn't know if I would be able to get them all filled, but after about forty minutes of knocking on doors, I was halfway through my dormitory and they were all completed! I'm working on getting more now.
Students are finding that asking their friends to sign the pledge is an easy ask. Blossom Jones at WKU explains, "I signed it because I want candidates that are going to be realistic about our future and new power. I did it for the creation of new energy jobs and for affordable renewable energy! I did it to show people the true cost of coal! I did it for our mountains!"
Over the last week, we had a 50% increase in New Power Pledgers!
Here are a few things going on next week...
- We'll see what Morehead, Transy, Spalding, and some other schools can do! These schools have just decided to join the Campus Challenge, and we welcome them!
- Spalding students are offering the pledge at a few events next week that are focused on energy.
- WKU students are offering the pledge at the Bowling Green Fair Housing Coalition's Community Fair Housing Festival, and at a campus film series focused on sustainability. Good luck, friends!
- U of L has tabling planned with a campus event.
