Operation Voter Madness - Quick Report from Cosmic Charlie's
We had a great night at Cosmic Charlie's on Friday night. We registered 20 voters and got 16 signatures on the Mountaintop Removal petition, and that was just one small piece of Lexington's 72-hour voter registration drive. So many people stopped by just to say "Thanks for doing this."
While canvassing the crowd, we talked to one guy and asked again if he'd like to register to vote or hear a little bit about some of the petitions and KFTC in general. He said he couldn't vote anyway, because he was a former felon. When I told him about our voting rights campaign, his face lit up a little bit and he eagerly took the handy packet that was already filled with all the essentials to petition the Governor to get a pardon and his voting rights back.
Numbers are important, but even when certain events felt less successful in terms of data collected, just the fact that people saw us out there in a big way this weekend is SO huge. Even if people didn't stop to chat or were just plain rude, the message was clear, hopefully penetrating some brains that might not have otherwise given voting much thought.
