Reflections from the 2023 KFTC Annual Meeting

Daishauna Aleman & others

When I entered the theater after breakfast and seen all the shoulder rolls, hips movements and drums thumping... I knew then that this event was going to be lit.

Shortly after that, I sat in total awe as I watched four beautiful, brilliant black women take the stage as leaders in our communities. I listened to their backgrounds and where they came from. I listened to them as they spoke passionately of their purpose and reasoning for showing up everyday to do the work they do. Most awakening, I watched how the people at KFTC’s annual meeting showed out and SUPPORTED them… I knew then that this event was going to be powerful.

"Seeing the youth on stage combining arts and activism; it took me back to my 14-year-old self where I, in a similar program, learned my voice mattered."

Lunch came around and I realized there were vegan and vegetarian options and not just deep-fried refined sugars… I knew then that this event would be tasteful.

After break, seeing the youth on stage combining arts and activism; it took me back to my 14-year-old self where I, in a similar program, learned my voice mattered… I knew then that this event was going to be purposeful.

Later that evening I had a conversation with Mr. Neblett and his wife. He shared with me a part of our history I was never taught in school… That did it for me folks, I knew then that this event would be my drive.

Exiting the building, seeing young adults rap unfiltered truths about the state our of society… I knew then that this event served its purpose.

Thank you.
