Scott County Voting Rights Update

We had another community meeting in Georgetown tonight to build our local campaign to restore voting rights to former felons who have served their debt to society.  This effort is particularly important in Scott County where State and Local Government Committee Chair, Senator Damon Thayer lives. 

Despite many core members being on vacation or otherwise out of town in July, we had a dozen people attend, with good energy and planning.

Members walked home with a total of 500 postcards to senator Thayer to get signed by neighbors and friends, along with pledges to bring them back signed next month.  Other members pledged to write letters to the editor or take other individual action.  We also recruited five new KFTC members at the meeting.

John Douglas and Byron Moran of the Georgetown/ Scott County NAACP were also present and, amongst other things, are inviting Senator Thayer to one of their meetings totalk to him about voting rights.

Taking immediate action, a few folks went out after the meeting to a community basketball tournament and passed out over a hundred handbills about voting rights in the predominantly African-American Boston area.

- Tuesday, July 14th - Voter Registration Table at the Ed Davis Learning Center's Basketball Tournament.  6:30pm to 7:30pm.

- Sunday, July 19th - Voter Registration Table at the Ed Davis Learning Center's Basketball Tournament.  6:30pm to 7:30pm.

- Thursday, August 6th - Georgetown Voting Rights Meeting.  6:30pm at the Ed David Learning Center.

- Monday, August 10th - Georgetown/ Scott County NAACP Meeting.  7pm at the Scott County Library.
