Swappin' Meetin' and registering voters in Harlan County
KFTC members and staff of Harlan County registered voters at the 46th Annual Kingdom Come Swappin' Meetin' this weekend!
The festival was held at KCTC Community College, Cumberland Campus, where many of our active members work and organize. Families from all over the county and region came out to swap crafts and meet up with neighbors.
Amidst the old time demonstrators, hog callin', and bluegrass performers, KFTC registered voters, gathered petitions and connected with folks from around the county. Over a dozen folks registered to vote and many more signed petitions in support of tax reform, restoration of voting rights, and renewable energy investment.
Displayed at the Swappin' Meetin' were the entries for this year's student art contest themed "Save Our Beautiful Mountains". Students from all over the country, ranging in age from 4 to 18 submitted their artwork to be judged and displayed, but not without controversy. Word has it that school board officials make a stink about the contest theme being "too controversial", but were too late to stop the contest once it had legs. Festival goers seemed to enjoy the student's art.
Members who couldn't table with us kept us well fed with world renowned Harlan County BBQ. Bennie Massey, KFTC member, Lynch councilperson, retired miner, and president of the East Kentucky Social Club, Lynch Chapter, took time for a picture while feeding us and others in Cumberland. If you missed this BBQ opportunity, you'll have it again next month at the Harlan County Chapter's Community Picnic at the Social Club in Lynch, KY on November 6. See you there!
