UK Students Explore Anti-Sweatshop Campaign
UK KFTC Students were visited by representatives of United Students Against Sweatshops and the Workers Rights Consortium tonight to talk about the possibility of a campaign to enact a code of conduct to prevent UK apparel from being produced in in sweatshop conditions.
Kentuckians For The Commonwealth worked in solidarity with UK student groups almost 10 years ago in a similar campaign, which focused on public education and lobbying of university officials for over a year before students eventually resorted to staging a sit-in in the campus Administration Building.
UK KFTC members plan to weigh the possibilities of this campaign along with the other work they've taken on to decide what level of support they can give to an anti-sweatshop campaign.
In other news, several UK KFTC members plan to participate in a Campus Camp Wellstone training in a few days to build campaigning skills, possibly with an eye towards running for public office one day or working as campaign managers. The training is Nov 21st and 22nd. Contact a UK KFTC member if you'd like to attend.
