Volunteer for your local Sound Car
We have a KFTC member who works in the Doo-Wop Shop in Lexington (they rent our instruments and sound equipment). Over the years, he's told us that he doesn't get to get involved in politics or issue work as much as he might like - but he can always help by making our members louder.
And this time of year, we always need his help, with our KFTC Sound Car.
It's a simple idea, borrowed from the politics of yesteryear, but it works.
On Election Day, we get some volunteers, some battery packs, speaker systems and microphones and strap them all into a car.
These KFTC Sound Cars drive slowly around town in low voter-turnout neighborhoods with messages like:
"Today is Election Day! If you haven't already voted, you have three hours and 15 minutes left. If you can hear my voice, you probably live in Campsie precinct, which means that you vote at the fire station on the corner of MLK and 4th St. Please get out and vote!"
People usually stop, look our way, wave, or smile, and occasionally someone flags us down to ask for a ride to the polls or some information. And then before we stick around long enough to actually annoy anyone, we head on to the next neighborhood.
One member last election remarked that it's a lot like an ice cream truck... but with Democracy instead of ice cream.
It's also a heck of a lot of fun and a good way to get people voting on Election Day, so contact your local KFTC Organizer and see if you're running a Sound Car in your community and volunteer!
