Voting rights action by Gov. Beshear a huge win for a healthy democracy
Kentuckians throughout the state are elated that Gov. Steve Beshear has taken steps to restore the voting rights for tens of thousands of state residents.
“Pretty awesome,” is how KFTC member Mantell Stevens reacted to the news. “To be able to vote means a lot to me. I always encourage people to vote, but now I can lead by example. I tell my nieces and nephews the importance of voting, but I could never vote myself.
“To be able to actually go and vote and to show them the importance of participating in democracy will mean so much to me,” added Stevens, who lost his right to vote in 2000 after spending 30 days in jail and three years on probation for a drug possession charge.
Kentucky Fairness Rally
Set up a meeting with your representative and senator and join others to lobby for a statewide fairness law. The Fairness Campaign will coordinate visits with legislators in the morning and a rally in the afternoon.
Jefferson County Chapter Meeting
Join us for our monthly chapter meeting! This month we'll discuss KFTC's fall fundraising campaign and ways we can connect with current and prospective members to build power as we look ahead to 2016. We'll also do a recap of the November election and begin planning our local strategy for the 2016 Kentucky General Assembly and primary election. Come learn and share ideas with us!
Last regular day General Assembly
This is the last regular legislative day of the 2016 General Assembly. Two final days are scheduled for April 11-12 to consider vetoes and pass last-minute legislation.
