Crepes of Wrath!
The annual "Crepes of Wrath" event was held this past Saturday in Eolia in the home of Sharman and Jeff Chapman-Crane. Letcher County members gathered early that morning for Jeff's infamous crepes filled with a choice of a buffet of fresh ingredients. Among the spread was fresh blueberries, strawberries, melons, yogurt, sour cream, honey, maple syrup, and pecans!
Jeff grilled up the crepes fresh and announced to the hungry crowd as each was ready. It was a shuffle in the living room to get to the kitchen for the next hot crepe!
After breakfast, tea, and coffee, members gathered at the kitchen table to start writing letters to local papers and their legislators.
Among the most contacted were Rep. Leslie Combs, about both her refusal to plan a meeting with her constituents in Letcher, Harlan, and Pike County and the Clean Energy Opportunity Act (HB 167), which has been assigned to her committee of Tourism and Energy. Letcher County members have been asking for an at-home sit down meeting with their Representative since the first week of legislative session, over a month ago. Rep. Combs stalled the request until about a week ago when her assistant let us know Rep. Combs will not be planning any meetings in Letcher County. Jeff Chapman-Crane asserted in his letter that Combs was "elected to represent all the people, not just a select few" and that "two hours of time doesn't seem like too much to ask". If you are planning a trip to Frankfort this session, feel free to tell Rep. Combs there are real people back in Letcher County who deserve an hour of her time, if not more. I'm sure she wouldn't mind a few extra letters as well: Capitol Annex 373, Frankfort, KY.
Letters also went to Senators Daymon Thayer, David Willams, Brandon Smith, and Ray Jones. Many of these in support of HB 70, to restore voting rights to nonviolent former felons and theClean Energy Opportunity Act (HB 167). Vanessa Hall told her former Senator Jones "On-bill financing of energy efficiency upgrades would really be a great boost for those of us who live in older homes. Have you priced a new heat pump lately?" She also informed Sen. Thayer, responsible for holding up the Voting Rights bill in his committee, that "we need to create pathways to citizenship for people, not relegate them to the fringes of society."
Sharman Chapman-Crane wrote a couple letters to newspaper editors, in addition to legislators and Greta Fields wrote Rep. Jim Gooch in support of the Stream Saver Bill, which is held up in his House Committee, Natural Resources & Environment. As some people finished up their letters, Vanessa and Greta made a couple dozen pinwheels for I Love Mountains Day in Frankfort next week. We are all already looking forward to next year's 'Crepes of Wrath'!!
