Northern Kentucky MLK Events

Ther Northern Kentucky chapter is celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend by working with allies to share his story and message, and to be standing alongside others in the community who carry on his work and legacy. From nonviolent direct action to expand voting rights, the need to meet with legislators and people within our community, and the intersectionality of race, class, environment, and other issues of injustice, the lessons we learend from his life still ring true today.

Beginning on Saturday, January 19th there is a conversation on racism in our community happening at Our Savior Church at 246 E. 10th Street in Covington. This Church is the home Parish for many Black Catholics in northern Kentucky, and has been an institution in the Covington community for years. They will be hosting a free breakfast at 9:30 in the morning, and will have a panel discussion featuring a variety of religious and racial perspectives. 

The following day, Sunday, January 20th, our chapter is hosting a screening of Selma as part of our racial justice film series, which we are sponsoring alongside the Kentucky and Ohio Poor People's Campaigns. The films starts at 1 pm at the Kenton County Public Library in Covington, and will have a discussion following that is being led by member Michelle Slaughter. 

Finally, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 21st, members will be joining the march at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati at 10:30 in the morning. You can follow the planned day at the MLK Coalition website. 

If folks are interested, there is a fundraiser for the MLK Coalition that morning at 8 Am at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and for the Northern Kentucky NAACP at 12 pm at the Newport Syndicate.
