TWO Singing For Democracy Gospel Festivals soon
We've held nine Singing For Democracy Gospel Fests over the last few years to restore voting rights to former felons who have served their time.
Over 1 in 5 voting age African Americans in the state has lost the right to vote because of Kentucky's felony disenfranchisement laws – and we're one of just 4 states where restoring one's right to vote is so difficult. We think that both our Democracy and our criminal justice system would be served by allowing people to vote when they've paid their debt to society.
Singing For Democracy Gospel Fests are a space for former felons to tell their stories, for gospel choirs and other performers to lend their voices to help strengthen our democracy, and for people to come together and take action.
Within the next few weeks, we have TWO Singing For Democracy events scheduled, including our first one in Eastern Kentucky
– Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:00 p.m. at Total Grace Baptist Church. 1313 North Limestone Street in Lexington; cosponsored by the “Steppin’ To A New Beat” Re-entry Program.
– Sunday, November 4th at 4:00 p.m. at the Consolidated Baptist Church, 180 Winterberry St in Hazard. Rev. Parker will speak, the Consolidated Baptist Choir will perform, Rev. Jake Ravazi (from Lynch) will perform and speak about his decades of experience in prison ministries
Please help us to spread the word about these evens and come join us if you can!
