We need you in Frankfort for I Love Mountains Day
I Love Mountains Day 2008 is only a week away, and it looks as if it will be the largest pro-environment rally ever held in Kentucky. We have groups of people coming from all over the state, from Bowling Green to Louisville to Corbin to Harlan. In fact, we have so many people who've committed to come out that we've had to move the rally from the Rotunda to the Capitol steps.
We want this to be the year we pass our Stream Saver Bill (House Bill 164), and a powerful presence at I Love Mountains Day will give lawmakers the push they need to pass this important legislation. So we need you, your family, and your friends to come to Frankfort with us to express your love for Knetucky's mountains and streams. If you can only come to Frankfort once this year, let it be this day.
Information about the rally:
Our rally starts at 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the Capitol building, weather permitting, but plan on arriving around 11 a.m. if you can so we have a strong crowd when we begin.
There we'll have an hour of speakers and music, including words by Wendell Berry and a performance by the Clack Mountain String Band. Following that there will be time to eat lunch or lobby your legislators until 1:15 p.m. when we will line the hallways and stairs to catch legislators as they go into session at 2 p.m.
We will debrief the day at 2 p.m. in room 154 in the Annex.
Attire:
We also ask your help in making sure our presence in Frankfort is large, unmistakable, and constructive. Please wear red, be respectful to all people (including legislators, receptionists and security officers), and help us make the day a celebration of all that we love and want to protect about the mountains. The attire in Frankfort ranges from dress suits to jeans and most everything in between. Wear whatever is most comfortable for you. There will be a lot of walking, so please wear shoes that are comfortable. Be sure to dress warmly, since our rally will be outside. Also, you will need a photo ID to enter the capitol building or annex.
Transportation:
We will have groups from various parts of the state carpooling to Frankfort for the rally. When you fill out our registration form specify that you need a ride and one of our organizers will contact you with specific details about carpools from your region. Otherwise, there is ample parking in the streets around the Capitol Building and in the Annex parking garage. Here is a map and directions to the Capitol Building.
If you wish to lobby:
For those who wish to lobby their legislators, please try to schedule an appointment with your legislator. This is the only way you can be guaranteed a meeting with him or her. You can schedule an appointment by calling their Capitol Annex office number. Make sure to come by room 113 of the Capitol Annex to sign in with us. We will be there from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. to answer any questions you might have. To be prepared for your lobbying experience, please download and print out our online lobby packet. It contains everything you'll need to talk with your legislators about the Stream Saver Bill. Extra lobbying materials will be available in room 113.
If you have additional questions please contact your local organizer or the London office.
