Chapter: Central Kentucky

The Central Kentucky chapter is one of the oldest chapters within KFTC. We are a diverse group of people who care about making our communities healthy and safe for all people. Our chapter members are interested in a range of issues, but currently we are working on educating folks about democracy through our voter empowerment work. We're also focusing on building economic, environmental and racial justice in Lexington and the Central Kentucky area. Please join us at our next chapter meeting or at one of our upcoming events. Madison County learns from guests, engages in great annual chapter meeting

Pie. Diversity. Relationships. Students. Growth. Beards. This might not seem like typical conversation fodder for a KFTC chapter meeting, but these topics served as just some of the highlights for the Madison County KFTC annual chapter meeting, held the evening of June 24.

Members spent the first half of the meeting conducting necessary business, including petitioning to remain a chapter, electing people to the Steering Committee and Executive Committee, and discussing KFTC’s platform, which they felt should be updated to better address concerns about the transportation of fossil fuels and fossil fuel by-products. The chapter also took time to celebrate work they’ve done so far this year, having already raised $1,600 in chapter fundraising, but held off on making new goals, saving that instead for the July chapter meeting when there is more time for discussion.

Special Election TOMORROW

56th District map from the Lexington Herald-LeaderThere is a special legislative election tomorrow (Tuesday, June 25th) in the 56th House District, which covers Woodford County plus parts of Franklin and Fayette Counties. 

If you live in the district or think you might, please visit KFTC's election website at www.KentuckyElection.org to learn about candidate stances, find voting location information, and more.  And whether you live in the district or not, please share this link with people who do live in the district - through email, Facebook, and more. 

In the last few weeks, KFTC members have sent out a mailing to thousands of likely voters, collected candidate responses, promoted our website heavily, brought people out to the candidate forum, and have held phone banks to follow up with people we know in the district. 

Unfortunately, turnout is often low in special elections, but KFTC members vote and the election might be decided by just a few votes, so each one matters.  

For KFTC members and friends who live in or near the district can get involved in some final election events today and tomorrow:

- Final Phone Bank - Monday, June 24th from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.  We'll be calling from the Central Kentucky KFTC Office at 250 Plaza Dr. Lexington, KY 40503.

- Election Day Field Work - Tuesday, June 25th from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. with a base location in Versailles in order to encourage people to go to the polls, direct voters, hold signs, run a sound car, and maybe even offer folks a ride to the polls. Let us know if you'd like to volunteer with us.

56th District map from the Lexington Herald-LeaderThere is a special legislative election coming up in two weeks on Tuesday, June 25th in the 56th House District, which covers Woodford County plus parts of Franklin and Fayette Counties. 

We've sent surveys out to the candidates so that we can communicate their answers out far and wide and they're now online at www.KentuckyElection.org !  There are also links to candidate sites, voting location information, and more.  So please share this link with people you know in the district.

Note that 56th District candidate Lyen Crews has not yet responded to the candidate survey.  Please feel free to contact his campaign and encourage him to respond.  We're eager to post his answers along with the other candidates' stances. 

We're also sending a mass mailing to voters in the district plus phone banks, field work and social media work to reach thousands of voters and help them cast an informed vote.

Central Kentucky members learn communications and tap into local art at May chapter meeting

The Central Kentucky KFTC Chapter held its May chapter meeting on Thursday, May 16 at the Episcopal Mission House. The room was full with more than 20 members, including several who were attending the meeting for the first time.

DSCN0076The meeting focused on using communications for the work of justice. KFTC Communications Team member Tim Buckingham gave a presentation to members on the most effective ways to get their message heard in an age where we are bombarded with tons of information on a daily basis. Members learned best practices for working with the media and tips on writing letters to the editor, as well as framing our message based on our personal stories and our vision of what we want to see for Kentucky. Tim challenged members by asking: "The task of communication can feel daunting. Authenticity is the key. How will you engage other humans in a meaningful way?"

56th District Special Election coming up June 25th

IMG_0574Representative Carl Rollins (D) stepped down from his legislative seat a few weeks ago, which covers Woodford County, parts of Franklin County, and a small piece of western Fayette County.   There will be a special election to fill the vacancy. 

The election is set for Tuesday, June 25th and polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  The deadline to register to vote for this election for people who live in the district but are not yet registered is May 28th.
