KFTC's campaign to register, educate and mobilize thousands of voters leading up to the November 6 election took a leap forward August 27 as KFTC ran an intensive two-day training of our brand new electoral organizers from chapter areas across the state. These folks will be assisting KFTC members and chapter organizers build grassroots power and strengthening our democracy.

KFTC members get the Blue Ribbon!

Last night's marathon Public Input meeting marked the end of this important stage of the Blue Ribbon Tax Commission's process for recommending state tax reforms. Although a few good folks had to leave before they could deliver their statement – the meeting ran more than an hour over time – the call for progressive tax reforms and adequate revenue for health, education, and environmental protection and clean energy was loud and clear. Sixteen of the speakers lined up were KFTC members, some coming as concerned Kentuckians and some wearing the hat of an ally organization.

Help decide the future of Kentucky's tax system

Last Chance sign.jpgKentuckians deserve investments in good jobs, clean air and water, quality educations, and healthy, vibrant communities. This Kentucky is possible, but we need to reform our state tax system.

And this summer may well be our best opportunity in the last decade to push forward tax reforms that improve our quality of life. Right now, Kentucky's Blue Ribbon Commission on Tax Reform is getting ready to hold Public Meetings across the state. Everyday Kentuckians are invited to share their best ideas about needed state tax reforms--ideas that will shape the Commission's recommendations for the 2013 General Assembly. The first of these meetings is in Paducah on May 29.

Sign on today to help clean air in Mammoth Cave park

Today is the last day the U.S. EPA is accepting comments on a proposed rule change that would weaken efforts to clean up the skies in national parks, including Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky.

The proposal would let coal-burning power plants in 28 states use a weaker air pollution emissions standard. In short, the EPA wants to allows power plants in those states to use the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR) to improve natural visibility conditions in Class I areas rather than the source-specific Best Available Retrofit Technology (BART).

Read an op-ed by Southern Kentucky chapter member, Jeanie Smith on the importance of an Earned Income Tax Credit for Kentuckians.

"I live in Warren County, where according to the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy, a state EITC would directly benefit more than 10,000 Warren County families, with an average credit of $330. Our families, like families all over Kentucky, are working hard to make it today. Having a $300-$400 tax credit that targets low- to moderate-income working families would make such a difference in the day-to-day."

A People's Guide to Planning

City planning and zoning processes can be a driving force in advancing racial, environmental, and housing justice and are an important avenue for expressing our vision for our future. The People's Guide to Planning, developed by KFTC member and CU Denver graduate student Tara Sorrels, is a tool to support residents to engage in planning and zoning processes in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  Inside, you'll find a glossary of planning terms, an overview of planning and zoning processes and structures, and a description of how plans are implemented in our community. Residents deserve a say in how our city grows and changes, and we can use this guide to see the impacts that these changes will have on our day to day lives and to organize for our vision for our community's future.
