Chapter: Central Kentucky

The Central Kentucky chapter is one of the oldest chapters within KFTC. We are a diverse group of people who care about making our communities healthy and safe for all people. Our chapter members are interested in a range of issues, but currently we are working on educating folks about democracy through our voter empowerment work. We're also focusing on building economic, environmental and racial justice in Lexington and the Central Kentucky area. Please join us at our next chapter meeting or at one of our upcoming events. Disenfranchisement of Kentuckians serving time for misdemeanors

One of KFTC's major statewide campaigns is to restore voting rights to former felons who have served their debt to society.  But a little know fact is that Kentuckians convicted of even the most minor misdemeanors who happen to be serving jail time on Election Day also lose the right to vote (Kentucky Constitution, section 145)

Note that Kentuckians who are in jail for, but who have not been convicted of either a felony or a misdemeanor, may request an absentee ballot by contacting the County Clerk in the county they are registered to vote in.   

UK KFTC registers 170 voters in one day and over 430 total so far

Our University of Kentucky KFTC group registered 170 voters on campus in just one day.

Add that to the last two campus registration days days and we've registered 430 students already.

Roots and Heritage a big success for voter empowerment

gIMG_6790 This past weekend, Lexington held its annual Roots and Heritage Festival, which is a celebration of African-American heritage, culture and achievement. Many members from the Central Kentucky chapter of KFTC ran a booth on Saturday where they registered 58 voters.gIMG_6745

We also had great conversations with festival goers about KFTC's work to restore voting rights to former felons who’ve paid their debt to society and got an incredible 427 postcards signed in support of voting rights. 

UK KFTC registers 142 voters in just over three hours!

Student members of  UK KFTC held a voter registration table on campus today and managed to register 142 voters in just over 3 hours.   We also passed out handbills inviting people to come out to the weekly meeting on campus which are at 6pm every Wednesday night in Student Center room 111. 

Sometimes, students had to wait for a free clipboard (we only brought 15) and we even had to make a run to the County Clerk's office to get more voter registration cards halfway through the day. 

Singing For Democracy in Lexington

KFTC and allies held a powerful Singing for Democracy event in Lexington last week to continue to build support for our campaign to restore voting rights to former felons who have served their debt to society. 

Primarily organized by KFTC member and leader Tayna Fogle, this is KFTC's 9th Singing for Democracy in the last few years.

gIMG_6395More than 250 people gathered at Shiloh Baptist Church for the event.  Performers included. Total Grace Missionary Baptist Church's choir, Bethsaida, Imani Church's choir, Antioch children's choir,   many solo singers, dancers, and more.  We also heard from a few elected leaders and half a dozen former felons telling their own stories. 

“We will not be quiet or sit still until every one of us has the right to vote," said Rev. Owens of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

We meet every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7 PM at the Dunbar Community Center at 545 North Upper in Lexington.
