Do you want the absolute best for your family and our community? So do we. The Kentucky River chapter of KFTC includes Perry County, Knott County, and Letcher County. If you live in this region, then we invite you to be part of our local KFTC chapter.

We are a diverse group of people – teachers, retired coal miners, students, unemployed, moms, grandparents and many more. We work together – as we have for many years – to protect our water and land, bring new energy and new jobs to our area, share our vision with elected officials and make sure our region is a safe place to call home for everyone.

KFTC offers principles and policies for shaping eastern Kentucky’s future

Hopeful about the future, some eastern Kentucky residents have offered suggestions for principles, process and policies to guide future development in the region.

Offered in an open letter to Gov. Steve Beshear and U.S. Rep Hal Rogers, the KFTC members acknowledged, “It won’t be easy, but we believe we can build a bright future here in the mountains.

Public officials welcome to the conversation about a just transition in Appalachia

KFTC members welcomed Monday’s announcement by Governor Steve Beshear, U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers and others about a public process to gather and share ideas about ways to build a healthy, diverse economy in eastern Kentucky.

“I’m really excited,” said Letcher County KFTC member Elizabeth Sanders. “These elected leaders now appear to be whole-heartedly joining the conversation that is already alive in this region. That’s a welcome step that we haven’t seen in recent years. I’m glad they are calling for genuine involvement and collaboration with people living in southeastern Kentucky, and anyone with an interest in moving this part of the state forward.”
 


Scott County & NKY Chapters Mountain Witness Tour

 On September 13th and 14th KFTC members and allies, anchored by members coming from Scott County, attended a Mountain Witness Tour visiting members from Letcher and Harlan counties. The group, which included members from the Northern Kentucky and Scott County chapters, a blogger named Stormy, her daughter, allies from the Georgetown College Sustainability Initiative, and members of Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition, began the weekend by visiting Wiley’s Last Resort on top of Pine Mountain.

Ethan Hamblin receives Sargent Shriver Youth Warriors Against Poverty Award

The Marguerite Casey Foundation has awarded 22-year-old Ethan Hamblin, a Berea College senior and KFTC member, of Gays Creek (Perry County) the Sargent Shriver Youth Warriors Against Poverty Leadership Award.

While interning at the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky in Hazard, Ethan established the Youth Leadership and Philanthropy Initiative to spur local youth to invest in enhancing their community. In the program, high school students participate in grantmaking, fundraising, nonprofit engagement and community service.

Ethan also serves on the steering committee of the Stay Together Appalachian Youth (STAY) Project, which provides Appalachian youth with the skills, resources and support they need to make lasting change at home.
