Chapter: Shelby County

The Saddlebred Horse Capital of the World is the home of the Shelby County KFTC group, which became an official chapter in October 2012. The Shelby County Horse Fair each June represents just one slice of the extensive agricultural diversity that exists cheek-by-jowl with rapid residential and commercial development.

Shelby Countians seeking to make positive change in our community have been working since 2012 to reform the Shelby Energy Rural Electic Cooperative, and have started work on other issues of economic and social justice, including putting an end to wage theft, discrimination and animal cruelty.

We welcome everyone interested in improving economic and social justice in Shelby County. Please join us is building a more modern, just, equal and strong Shelby County.

Legislators asked to consider safety of pipelines

Two legislative committee hearings in July focused on pipeline safety in Kentucky.

On July 16, KFTC member Bob Pekny joined Rep. David Floyd to talk about the Pipeline Safety Bill that was introduced in the 2015 legislative session.

“Kentucky is crisscrossed with pipelines of various sorts, most of them related to energy” Rep. Floyd told the Interim Joint Committee on Economic Development and Tourism. “We believe an increase in precautions would be wise.”

Shelby County KFTC Year of Community-Building

Members from the Shelby Co. KFTC chapter will be kicking off their ‘Year of Community Building” this April. Just in time for Spring and Earth Day, the first event will be a film screening and discussion of Annie Leonard’s short film “The Story of Stuff”, a film “about the way we make, use and throw away all the Stuff in our lives.” 

Shelby Co. chapter, NAACP settle down to soul food and celebrate Black History Month

Shelby County chapter members enjoyed a night of soul food and fellowship this past Friday. The spread ran the gamut: cornbread, corn chowder, breaded and fried catfish, fried chicken, barbecue ribs, coleslaw, beans, kale, peach cobbler, you name it! It was as down-home as you could get. The Shelby County chapter of the NAACP provided the tasty provisions while the KFTC chapter provided the entertainment. It came in the form of a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable presentation by local historian Diane Perrin Coon. 

Ms. Coon gave a talk entitled "Slavery, Anti-Slavery and the Underground Railroad in Shelby County." The talk was well-received, highlighting demographic trends as well as personal stories from history. Ms. Coon, a gifted storyteller, laid bare Shelby County’s complicities in the institution of slavery as well as its hand in the abolition of that institution.

We've surveyed candidates running for the U.S. Senate and House, state legislative races, and local races in Louisville, Lexington, Danville, Berea, Richmond, Georgetown, Newport, Florence, Covington, Bowling Green and more!

Shelby County pie auction fun and fundraising

Shelby County Pie Auction September 18, 2014The Shelby County KFTC Chapter raised more than $800 at its first Pie Auction September 18.

About 30 people bid on 13 pies (including a cake and a cobbler), with winning bids ranging from $35 to $100. People also purchased KFTC shirts and hats and made direct donations.

KFTC members and friends who contributed pies went to the effort of making two of each: one for auction and one for tasting before the bidding began.  Goods included derby pie, chocolate pie, peach cobbler, Belgian butter cookie cake, chess pie, lemon meringue pie and others. During the tasting, the talented Susi Wood entertained the crowd with live acoustic music.<--break->
