Stream Clean-Up on Wilson Creek
Residents of Wilson Creek in Floyd County have been engaged in a long-term battle to protect their land from largescale strip mining. It is here where a group of neighbors – with the help of Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, Appalachian Citizen Law Center and The Kentucky Resources Council – were able to win an important victory imposing strict conditions on any future mining which in effect has stopped a large surface mining operation. Bev May, a long-time resident of Wilson Creek, and her neighbor’s efforts were documented in the KET film Deep Down.
On Saturday October 17, join members of the Big Sandy Watershed Watch, Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, and Appalachia Voices for an afternoon of stream clean-up at Wilson Creek. We will meet at 1:00 p.m. for some brief introductions and an overview of water monitoring efforts of each organization. Then we'll take our gloves and boots into the creek to clean up. Afterwards, we'll come back together for food, fellowship, and music making.
We will supply garbage bags and rubber gloves. If you have rubber boots of any sort, we would recommend you wear those. And since we'll be in the creek cleaning up, old clothes you don't mind getting dirty are also recommended.
Everyone is invited and welcome to attend.
