Members ask for strong protections for streams affected by mining
Members of KFTC, the Sierra Club, Kentucky Waterways Alliance, Appalachian Citizens Law Center, Kentucky Conservation Committee, Appalachian Voices, Kentucky Resources Council and others had a strong presence at a public hearing September 3 to advocate for the strongest possible protections for water in communities where coal is mined and downstream.
Public hearing on Stream Protection Rule
The U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has issued a draft Stream Protection Rule that is supposed to protect streams from the impacts of coal mining. This Lexington hearing (one of six around the country) will allow the public to comment on the proposed rule. Speakers will have up to two minutes each.
Land Reform Committee Meeting
KFTC Land Reform Committee meeting are help ever other month and are a time for Land Reform Committee members to come together to review, evaluate and develop strategies to achieve the specific goals the committee has established.
The meeting are open to all KFTC members.
Abandon Mined Lands (AML) Webinar
At 7:00 pm we'll hear from Eric Dixon and Kendall Bilbrey, two Appalachian Transition Fellows researching ways Abandoned Mine Lands funds could be used to help economic development in mine-affected regions, including how these plans are part of the White House's POWER+ plan and could be used within Kentucky's SOAR initiative.
Week in Washington
