10th Singing For Democracy a big success

Posted by: Dave Newton on October 24, 2012

Last night at Total Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Lexington, KFTC members and friends held our tenth Singing For Democracy Gospel Fest.

About 150 people gathered for the event, which included a step show by Thunderous Praise, performances by Total Grace's choir and Renew, plus solo acts and former felons telling their personal stories.

Tayna Fogle opened up the events amidst a stage filled with ladders, hammers, saw horses, and power tools and talked about building a Democracy - and the enfranchisement of former felons as an important step in that process.

KFTC Members Vote!

Posted by: Dave Newton on October 23, 2012

We crunched the numbers and found that a whopping 73% of eligible KFTC members have voted in all three of the more recent General Elections we studied in Kentucky (2008, 2006, and 2005). Compare that to only 37% of Kentucky registered voters overall who voted in all three of those same elections.

We can estimate from this that more than 95% of KFTC members who have the right to vote will vote in the big presidential election this November.

Voter Registration Report from Southern Kentucky Chapter

Posted by: Alan Smith on October 22, 2012

Greetings from Bowling Green!

The Southern Kentucky chapter had a blast with voter empowerment this year, registering 469 voters and having a ton of great conversations along the way. photo(1)

Our efforts began with regular tabling at the Community Farmers Market every Saturday, where we have made many good connections for future work. We also committed ourselves to canvassing often on the west side of Bowling Green, a low-income/minority section of town.  Our chapter meetings are held at a community center in this neighborhood, and members have given substantial effort over the years to forge relationships with residents of the west side.

“Let's get ready to rumble!!!” - Voter Madness

Posted by: Jennifer Jeffers on October 19, 2012

(Below is an account from last week's incredible 48-hour-straight voter registration marathon in Louisville)

BeckiandEmilyMost people in Kentucky know what Madness is all about. You hear people talking about it in bars, on the streets, at the grocery store, even in church. Fans are out in hordes – crazy outfits, team tees, homemade signs, cheering, dancing, shouting – going crazy. Lots of high-power individuals coming together as a team. High stakes, high scores, every second counts. The air crackles with energy and excitement.

Members of KFTC and Kentucky Jobs with Justice definitely know what VOTER Madness is all about. Starting Friday, October 5th, our voter registration teams dominated the Louisville “courts” for 48 straight hours and the crowds went wild. From St. James Court to St. Stephen's Church, from Fourth Street Live to McD's at five, our team of 20 members, organizers and volunteers brought their A-game. The result? Democracy scored big. According to WLKY News, “The number of registered voters in Jefferson County has hit a record level of more than 500,000.”
