Water testing workshop planned for Floyd County

On Saturday June 22, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, KFTC will offer the second of four additional water testing workshops planned for this year as part of the ongoing Community Science and Public Health project. At this workshop, which will be held in Floyd County, we will learn how to do basic tests of local streams, learn how to get others in your community involved, and learn about other water quality issues we face in the mountains. We will spend a portion of the day out in streams, practicing what we’ve learned and testing local water sources.

Last year, over fifty KFTC members from around Eastern Kentucky gathered together at two different trainings to learn how to use the tools and practices of community science to gather data about the quality of streams by testing conductivity, total dissolved solids, and pH. Members also learned how to discuss their findings within their communities and to raise awareness about the importance of water quality and the need to protect our most valuable resource in the mountains. The workshops offered this year focus on gaining hands-on experience with water testing and communicating your findings with your community. 

People of all skill and interest levels are encouraged to attend. If you haven't attended a workshop before, this workshop is a great opportunity to get started and learn the basics of water testing. If you have attended a workshop before, it will be a great refresher and a chance to pick back up if you haven't been able to do much water testing. 

Testing equipment and a bagged lunch will be provided. All workshops are free and open to the public.
