The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency made a major announcement today that will lead to much greater protection for streams in Appalachia's coal-producing region.

Guided by a growing body of science, EPA will propose water quality standards that could have the effect of prohibiting most valley fills associated with mountaintop removal mining.

Frasure Creek Mining is filling streams without permits

KFTC and the Sierra Club have put the Frasure Creek Mining company on notice for destroying streams at three mountaintop removal coal mines in eastern Kentucky without permits to do so.  The Notice gives the company 60 days to correct the violations or face legal action from the groups. 

KFTC member recalls Scotia Mine disaster

KFTC member Mimi Pickering of Whitesburg has a great article in the Daily Yonder about the Scotia Mine disaster of 1976, in which 26 miners died in two explosions within two days. Pickering recently joined families and friends of the dead miners at the unveiling of a memorial in Oven Fork in Letcher County.

Eastern Kentucky Miners with Black Lung Get Support Through Health Care Reform

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the health care reform bill, that passed at the federal level on Sunday, expands support to victims of black lung disease. The provisions included reverse major cuts to black lung benefit eligibility made during the Reagan administration.
