Chapter: Kentucky River

Do you want the absolute best for your family and our community? So do we. The Kentucky River chapter of KFTC includes Perry County, Knott County, and Letcher County. If you live in this region, then we invite you to be part of our local KFTC chapter.

We are a diverse group of people – teachers, retired coal miners, students, unemployed, moms, grandparents and many more. We work together – as we have for many years – to protect our water and land, bring new energy and new jobs to our area, share our vision with elected officials and make sure our region is a safe place to call home for everyone.

H2O-rganizing builds momentum in eastern Kentucky

Building on the successes of the first Community Organizing & Water Testing Training held in Prestonsburg back in May, over 30 people gathered in Whitesburg this past Saturday to learn, share, and grow together. Katie, an attendee who lives a few feet from the North Fork of the Kentucky River in Hazard said, "we came here to learn about community building, and in a way that’s really what we did here within this whole group.”

Last summer Pallavi Podapati, of Hazard, worked with the Perry and surrounding KFTC chapters on several adventures, from a listening project across several eastern Kentucky counties to capturing the March on Blair Mountain, WV in photographs.  She is currently a pre-med student at the University of Pennsylvania and very active in local Philadelphia community campaigns to encourage banks and corporations to de-fund mountaintop removal in Appalachia and invest in mountain communities. 

East Kentuckians Support Statewide Fairness

Matt Heil Bereans for FairnessLots of well-publicized energy has been put into Fairness organizing and strategizing in eastern Kentucky communities over the last year or more. Bereans for Fairness has had an exponentially growing wave of organizing efforts for a city ordinance in support of fairness and human rights, including several strong shows of local and statewide support at city council meetings and rallies.  Last summer, there was great public outcry after two men were ejected from the Hazard Pavilion pool for alleged public displays of affection.
